The dark vertical streaking on Florida roofs is not dirt and it is not shingle failure. It is largely Gloeocapsa magma, a hardy cyanobacteria that feeds on the limestone filler in asphalt shingles and spreads downward as rain carries it across the roof plane. Will roof cleaning damage my shingles?
Not when it is done as a low-pressure soft wash, which is the method roofing manufacturers and industry bodies point to for removing algae. What damages shingles is pressure washing — it strips the granule layer that protects the asphalt underneath. We do not put pressure on roofs.
How long until the streaks come back?
It depends heavily on your specific roof: how much shade it gets, whether branches overhang it, which direction the affected slope faces, and how humid the microclimate around your house is. Jacksonville roofs under heavy oak canopy regrow noticeably faster than roofs on open lots. We would rather set an honest expectation at the estimate than quote a number that suits marketing.
Do you walk on the roof?
Only when the roof material, pitch and condition make it safe, and we minimise it. Most residential roof cleaning in Jacksonville is performed from ladders and the ground using low-pressure application equipment, which is both safer for our crew and gentler on your roof.
Can you clean a tile roof?

Is roof cleaning worth it, or should I just replace the roof?
Streaking is a surface growth issue and not by itself a sign that the roof has failed. If your roof is structurally sound and simply looks bad, cleaning restores its appearance for a fraction of replacement cost. If the roof is near end of life, curling, or losing granules heavily, cleaning is not the right spend and we will tell you that.
